Avondale is a traditional neighborhood with small boutique-type shopping, quaint streets and small-town charm. Today the two neighborhoods offer a rich architectural heritage. Their natural beauty is minded by oak-canopied streets and places. The mix between residential and commercial makes a very special atmosphere. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
History: Originally the home of unspectacular plantations, the district changed its face after the Civil War. Residential lots were created, homes were built and a variety of architectural styles established. Riverside had its peak time after the Great Fire of 1901 that destroyed most of downtown Jacksonville. By 1920, the Avondale area was being developed as a planned community with curving roadway and parks. For more information:
