POSTED: 9:10 am EDT August 23, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- In the criteria of National Geographic Adventure magazine, Boise, Idaho, may be the best place in the United States to live or visit, but Jacksonville makes the list of 31 "amazing adventure towns."
According to the feature, the rating combines details on the real estate market, population density, and scene, with activities, outfitters, and good places to eat in each place.
"We searched the country over to find the right towns for you, whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or the perfect place to relocate," according to National Geographic Adventure's Web site.
Jacksonville makes the group's list of six beach towns, which also includes Pismo Beach, Calif.; Atlantic Beach, N.C.; Cordova, Alaska; Kahului, Hawaii; and Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
"Jacksonville contains all the action (and employment) of a big city, veined by the natural habitat of the St. Johns River estuaries," the magazine writes. "At Jacksonville the river's freshwater meets the Atlantic, making for perfect marsh paddling and ocean strolling along 20 miles of white-sand beach."
The listing also notes that Jacksonville has the largest city park system in the country, mentions the Baldwin Trailhead bike trail, the Timucuan Preserve and the dunes of Atlantic Beach. It also notes that "the coconut shrimp is devine at the Thai Room."
"All that's missing is mountains," according to the Web site.
